Three Things, Ten Jobs: 1 Year of Cartoon Recruit
Thank you, recruits! Truly! CartoonRecruit.com has officially hit its one year milestone, and I would like to thank all of the artists who have interacted with this project so far; including those of you who sent in job posts and feedback early on. There is much more that I would like to do to support artists looking for work in the animation industry and I hope that you will join me on that journey.
As part of the 1-year celebration, we have brought back the monthly portfolio threads on LinkedIn. We would like to make it as easy as possible for recruiters to find available talent, as well as create opportunities for artists to network and provide positive feedback on one another’s work. I look forward to seeing you in the comments!
Three Things:
KPop Demon Hunters set for an encore?
After becoming the most popular Netflix animated film of all time in its sixth week after release, The Wrap reported that the streamer is considering follow ups to KPop Demon Hunters which may include two sequels, a live-action remake, and a stage show. It’s worth remembering that Maggie Kang and Chris Appelhans’ film (produced by Sony Pictures Animation) was an original story not based on prior IP. It serves as a reminder that the only way to develop successful new franchises is to take risks and greenlight a wide variety of projects.
Trump pulls the plug on the Corporation for Public Broadcasting
Following the Trump administration’s order to rescind $1.1 billion dollars from the Corporation for Public Broadcasting, the organization announced that it will close down by January 2026. As reported in Animation Magazine, the CPB will begin winding down as it cuts the majority of staff positions this coming September. The CPB was established by president Lyndon B. Johnson in 1967 and provides significant funding for local public television stations as well as television programming grants, including to PBS.
Long Story Short greenlit for second season, prior to debut
Variety reports that Netflix renewed Raphael Bob-Waksberg’s new series, Long Story Short, on the same day that it released the new series’ first official trailer. Bob-Waksberg previously created noteworthy shows BoJack Horseman (with character designs led by Lisa Hanawalt) and Undone (co-created with Kate Purdy). Hanawalt, creator of Tuca & Bertie, returns as the supervising producer for the new series.
