Role Call Roundup: Animation jobs from February 2 to 8

Look alive, recruits! And welcome to CartoonRecruit.com’s weekly Role Call Roundup. On the main page, I monitor and curate links to job posts (updated daily) from an ever-expanding list of animation studios. This blog is where I collect job posts from the past week and reflect on hiring trends across the animation industry.

This week, we added 85 animation jobs to our directory — including 18 remote listings. In our job highlights, we examine recent posts at Disney Television Animation in Burbank and Glendale, Sony Pictures Animation in Culver City, as well as Outpost VFX in Bournemouth and London. Also this weekend, we’re celebrating an exceptional series' victories at the Annie Awards!

Help us keep this production going

CartoonRecruit.com is an ad-free animation job board designed for industry artists searching for their next production. Our directory will be provided to the community as a free service indefinitely, but if you find our project useful and want to support what we do consider supporting our project on Patreon.

As many of our readers are at different points in their careers, all of our Patreon tiers offer the same reward: full access to our community Discord server. In addition to helping cover costs associated with maintaining the last website on the internet that isn’t trying to convince you to bet on sporting events, your support sustains our work and helps us take on new projects.

Studio highlights and analysis

Disney Television Animation is the division of The Walt Disney Company responsible for producing animated television series and direct-to-video films. This studio, based out of Glendale, is best known for their acclaimed series, Big City Greens, The Owl House, The Ghost and Molly McGee as well as Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur. The studio is currently hiring for five roles in Burbank on an unannounced project and two in Glendale, California, on an unannounced Disney Junior series.

Sony Pictures Animation was founded in 2002, following the success of Sony Pictures Imageworks’ contributions to Stuart Little 2 (as well as an ill-fated attempt to sell the VFX studio). The studio has since become an early and influential leader in stylized 3D animation, with productions like Hotel Transylvania, Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse and The Mitchells vs. the Machines. Sony Pictures Animation is currently hiring for three roles in Culver City, California

Outpost VFX was founded in 2013 by Duncan McWilliam, who previously worked as a VFX artist and supervisor at The Moving Picture Company in the UK. The studio, with locations in Bournemouth, Montreal, London and Mumbai, is best known for their VFX work on high budget TV series and blockbuster movies, including Bridgerton, The Wheel of Time and Captain America: Brave New World. The studio is currently hiring four roles in either Bournemouth or London.

Hybrid and on-site highlights

Want your next production to be inside an animation studio? Like, corporeally and not through a zoom call or the last working fax machine? The jobs in this category include listings that are either entirely on-site or require a set amount of time collaborating with peers in-person throughout the week.

Remote work highlights

Looking for productions which offer the flexibility to work from home full-time? CartoonRecruit.com sorts remote jobs into two categories. “Remote” is for jobs that can be performed within a wide geographic area, while “Remote (Local)” only allows for remote work in a specific city or region.

These distinctions can be important, as it’s not unusual for TV and film productions to be supported by tax credits which incentivize hiring employees in a particular region.

Recapping the 52nd Annie Awards

The 52nd Annie Awards took place on Saturday, February 8th, and the top of the ticket at the awards tells a very different story than the craft categories. DreamWorks Animation’s The Wild Robot won best feature film. Flow, produced by Sacrebleu Productions, Take Five and Dream Well Studio, won best independent feature. In the television categories, The Tiny Chef Show, Marvel's Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur, and Bob’s Burgers took home the top awards for preschool, children and mature audiences, respectively.

But the clear winner of the night was Arcane, from Fortiche Studio and Riot Games. The acclaimed Netflix series, infamous for reportedly shattering budget records, swept every TV/media category it was nominated for: Visual effects, character animation, direction, music, production design, storyboarding and editorial. While it’s unclear if the current economics of streaming can sustain another series with a budget of $250 million over 18 episodes, it does show that by hiring top talent and allowing for extended development time, Fortiche Studio was able to produce exceptional work.

Congratulations to the crews of all winning and nominated productions! We hope that more productions get the opportunity to invest in artistry and talent to the same extent as Arcane.

Are you responsible for hiring decisions at your studio? Get in touch with us on LinkedIn! We are currently working on Q&A discussions with recruiters at studios, and participating could put a link to your studio's career page directly in the inboxes of talented artists searching for their next productions.

We believe that the best thing that artists applying for a job can do is to research studios before they apply. Our goal is to provide specific advice for artists applying to very different kinds of studios.
